Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) staff will share a draft management plan for the new Gail Achterman Wildlife Area on Monday, January 22, 2018 at the ODFW headquarters, 4034 Fairview Industrial Drive SE, Salem, OR from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m.

After a short presentation, staff will answer questions and take public comments on the proposed plan. Read the draft plan.

The ten-year plan will guide management actions on the 290-acre property. The draft plan calls for ODFW to:

  • Maintain the structure and function of wetlands and riparian habitats;
  • Enhance habitat features for wetland and riparian-dependent wildlife species;
  • Support natural hydrologic processes;
  • Protect significant cultural resources;
  • Conduct monitoring for Willamette Wildlife Mitigation Program (WWMP) compliance, management effectiveness and program implementation.

Comments are accepted until February 12 by emailing Ann Kreager at Ann.Kreager@state.or.us.

ODFW took ownership of the Gail Achterman Wildlife Area in 2016 with funding provided by Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) through the WWMP. The WWMP is a 15-year agreement between ODFW and BPA to settle federal wildlife habitat mitigation obligations in the Willamette Valley.
The Gail Achterman Wildlife Area borders the Willamette River west of the city limits of Salem and south of Highway 22 in Polk County.
