The best trick in the book on this stretch during this time of the year is to go early. You can even start before sun up, and take advantage of the Mutant Stone Hatch. This is a nocturnal stonefly that does not like any sunlight. These stones don’t have wings, so they run out across the water from the gravel bars to lay their eggs. As you can imagine, hearing a large brown crush your fly in the dark is very exciting. I love the Berrett’s Mutant stone in size 8 and 10. It is also effective just to tie on a size 10 chubby Chernobyl in gold is a great pattern. Apart from the early morning fishing, there is still some good riffle fishing in the afternoons. I like to use a pink sparkle flag size 18 or just a pink size 18 no hackle. Hopper fishing is still very good too. I like a size 6 tan juicy hopper!
