Fishing has been slow on the Necanicum recently, and the hatchery run is just about over. Conditions were low and clear last week. A little rise in the river due to snow melt is predicted for Wednesday through Friday this week. The Necanicum probably won’t come up very much, but hopefully the rise in level will add a little color and get some fish moving.
Dark colors, small presentations, light line, and stealthy tactics will probably produce the best results on this river. There will mostly be wild fish throughout the system at this point, so be prepared to catch and release. Float fishing jigs or beads, drift fishing, nymphing, and swinging flies or spinners are all good techniques.
Anglers are reminded that the Necanicum closes to steelhead fishingon April 1, to protect spawning wild steelhead and out migrating juveniles; so this Saturday is the last day for winter steelhead on this river.
