The Main Recreation Area is holding a monthly trout derby for those who shore fish from that stretch. The largest three trout weight in at the Main Rec get prizes. It’s $5 to enter the derby. Mt. Lassen planted 1,500 pounds of trout on March 2nd. 10% were trophy sized trout. The water temp has been around 62 degrees and there is about 2.5 feet water clarity. Trout are being caught from the shoreline near the Main Recreation Area and the Pines. Boaters have been having the best luck at the Rock Wall, Farrells Landing, Sandy Point, and Scow Canyon. Chartreuse, rainbow or garlic Power Bait or Mice Tails work well for trout. Nightcrawlers have been doing really well the past week. The water is muddy from the rains so using strong scented baits is best. Trollers use broken-back fire tiger Rapalas, Mepps spinners or Kastmasters.
